Volkswagen ID.3 GTI Debuts With 326 HP And Rear-Wheel Drive
Volkswagen's electric GTI gets 326 hp, rear-wheel drive and a 79 kWh battery pack, but U.S. availability has not yet been confirmed.
Volkswagen has revealed the all-new ID.3 GTI, giving its iconic performance badge an electric powertrain and, for the first time in GTI history, rear-wheel drive. The new electric hatchback produces 326 hp and 545 Nm, making it the most powerful production GTI in Volkswagen's 50-year history.
The ID.3 GTI is still described as a near-production concept and is not yet available for sale. Volkswagen says pre-sales will begin in early 2027, with the model scheduled to launch in the first quarter of next year. The automaker has not announced U.S. availability or pricing.
326 HP Makes The ID.3 GTI The Most Powerful GTI Yet
Power comes from Volkswagen's APP550 electric drive system, which produces 240 kW, or 326 PS, and sends 545 Nm of torque to the rear axle through a single-speed gearbox. It essentially means that the ID.3 GTI is the first GTI in Volkswagen history to use rear-wheel drive.
Volkswagen says the motor's maximum torque is available from a standstill, while Launch Control is integrated into the new GTI driving mode. The claimed 0-to-100 km/h time is 5.6 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 125 mph.
The electric motor is powered by a 79 kWh net battery. Volkswagen currently forecasts a WLTP range of up to 601 km, while DC fast charging at up to 183 kW is expected to take the battery from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 29 minutes. Both range and charging figures are preliminary forecasts rather than final production specifications.
Volkswagen Gives The Electric GTI A Dedicated Chassis
The ID.3 GTI is not simply an ID.3 with a more powerful motor. Volkswagen has fitted the car with electronically controlled DCC adaptive dampers as standard, along with a revised vehicle dynamics manager and a GTI-specific setup for the front suspension. The chassis uses a MacPherson front axle and five-link rear axle, while progressive steering is standard.
The new GTI mode switches the chassis to its most aggressive setting. Volkswagen has also modified the springs, dampers, anti-roll bars, front-axle elastokinematics and tires specifically for the GTI. The car rides on standard 20-inch wheels with 225-section tires, with 235-section tires available as an option.
Volkswagen is also adding a new electronic sound system. The exterior sound operates at low speeds to meet pedestrian warning requirements, while Sport mode generates a separate performance-oriented sound at speeds up to 30 mph. The sound changes according to inputs including vehicle speed, accelerator position and drive torque.
The ID.3 Gets Traditional GTI Design Cues
Volkswagen has given the ID.3 GTI a specific front end designed to separate it from the regular ID.3. The front features IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, a transparent illuminated strip connecting the headlights and a red strip positioned above it. The red accent is a direct visual reference to the red grille surround used on the original Golf GTI.
It also gets standard 20-inch Wörthersee alloy wheels, a name referencing the famous GTI gathering at Lake Wörthersee in Austria. Gloss-black exterior mirror caps and side skirts add further GTI-specific details. Tornado Red will also be available. Volkswagen first offered the color on the second-generation Golf GTI in the 1980s.
Inside, the ID.3 GTI gets a red-and-black theme, sports seats, a red 12-o'clock steering-wheel marker and a red strip running across the dashboard. The new digital cockpit sits alongside a 12.9-inch touchscreen using Volkswagen's latest Innovision infotainment system.
It Is Still Intended To Be An Everyday Hatchback
Despite the performance focus, Volkswagen is emphasizing the GTI's everyday usability. The ID.3 GTI retains the flexible interior layout of the standard ID.3 and adds vehicle-to-load capability, allowing owners to power or charge external devices through an adapter connected to the charging interface.
Volkswagen specifically highlights the ability to take two e-bikes on a weekend trip and recharge them from the car between rides. The electric hatchback also introduces new driver-assistance technology. Its optional Connected Travel Assist can use online information to respond to traffic lights, including automatically braking the vehicle to a stop when it detects a red light. One-pedal driving is also available, allowing the accelerator pedal to control strong deceleration toward a standstill.
The GTI Badge Is Moving Beyond The Golf
The ID.3 GTI arrives during Volkswagen's 50th anniversary celebrations for the GTI nameplate. The company has already revealed the 325-PS Golf GTI Edition 50 and, earlier this year, the 226-PS ID. Polo GTI. The ID.3 GTI now becomes the second all-electric model to carry the badge and the most powerful production GTI Volkswagen has announced. That makes its 326-PS output more than a simple specification headline.
The more consequential change is underneath: after five decades of front-wheel-drive GTIs, Volkswagen is putting the electric GTI's power at the rear wheels. Volkswagen says pre-sales for the ID.3 GTI will begin in early 2027, with the launch planned for the first quarter. Pricing and U.S.-market availability have not been announced yet.
