10 New Cars That Don’t Fit The Usual American Automotive Mold
A 641-hp EV that pretends to change gears. A compact pickup with a hybrid engine. A 1,064-hp Corvette without an electric motor. And, somehow, two different Toyota Crowns.
The 2026 U.S. market is full of vehicles that would have been difficult to explain a decade ago. Electrification is partly responsible, but there's more going on than a change in power source. Automakers are experimenting with familiar body styles, borrowing technology from one another and finding new ways to keep performance cars relevant. The results don't always fit into the categories we're used to.
01 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N
The Ioniq 5 N has no conventional gearbox. Hyundai decided that it shouldn't stop it from behaving like it has one. The N e-Shift manipulates the electric motors to recreate the sensation of gear changes, while N Active Sound+ supplies a soundtrack to accompany them. Hyundai has gone much further elsewhere in the car, with N Drift Optimizer, launch control and N Grin Boost, which temporarily raises output from 601 hp to 641 hp. The current U.S. model has an EPA-estimated 221-mile range and is being sold in limited quantities.
There is an obvious inefficiency in deliberately interrupting the seamless acceleration that is one of an electric motor's advantages. But outright speed isn't really the problem Hyundai was trying to solve here. Making an EV entertaining beyond its acceleration was.
02 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid
Pop the hood of a CX-50 Hybrid and the Mazda-Toyota relationship becomes more tangible than a joint factory or corporate announcement. Mazda designed the hybrid version around the Toyota Hybrid System. It combines a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder, three electric motors, a hybrid battery, e-CVT and electric all-wheel drive. Total output is 219 hp, while the EPA estimate is 38 mpg combined. The 2026 CX-50, including the Hybrid, is built at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Alabama.
The rest of the vehicle is still a CX-50, and Mazda continues to sell its own 2.5-liter naturally aspirated and turbocharged powertrains alongside the hybrid. That leaves buyers looking at three versions of ostensibly the same crossover developed through two very different engineering routes.
03 Toyota Crown Signia
Toyota calls the Crown Signia a crossover SUV. Look at it from the side and the taxonomy becomes less obvious. Its roof is long, the body sits relatively low, and there is none of the upright, squared-off profile that has become shorthand for an SUV. Yet the functional numbers are appropriately crossover-like: electronic on-demand AWD is standard and folding the second row opens as much as 68.8 cubic feet of cargo room. The hybrid system produces 240 hp and Toyota estimates 38 mpg combined.
Toyota's decision to sell it as a crossover rather than revive the station-wagon vocabulary is probably more revealing than arguing over which label is technically correct. American buyers get something remarkably close to the old wagon brief without Toyota needing to sell them a wagon.
04 Ford Maverick
Ford spent decades demonstrating how much capability it could fit into a pickup. The Maverick asks how much of that capability plenty of owners actually need. The 2026 truck starts with a 2,000-pound towing capacity. Buyers who need more can specify the 4K Tow Package and raise that figure to 4,000 pounds. A 2.5-liter hybrid remains part of the range, while all-wheel drive is available.
None of those figures is going to worry an F-150. They aren't supposed to. The Maverick gives someone a pickup bed and useful towing capacity without making the dimensions and capabilities of a traditional full-size truck part of the deal. That sounds obvious enough that it's worth wondering why compact pickups spent so long largely absent from American showrooms.
05 Subaru WRX
There are quicker ways to build a modern sports sedan than Subaru's. The base 2026 WRX still comes with a 271-hp 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine, a six-speed manual and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Its engine layout remains unusual; the combination of AWD and three pedals narrows the field further. Subaru has even brought the WRX's starting price back down to $33,995 for 2026 with the return of a base trim.
The WRX isn't especially small or especially powerful by current performance-car standards. Its appeal has long depended on putting several attributes together that are much harder to find in the same showroom elsewhere. For 2026, Subaru apparently sees enough value in that recipe to make the cheapest version easier to buy.
06 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing
Cadillac's U.S. lineup tells two stories at once. Most of it reflects where luxury buyers have gone: crossovers and SUVs occupy much of the showroom. Then there is the CT4-V Blackwing.
It is rear-wheel drive, uses a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 rated at 472 hp and 445 lb-ft, and can still be ordered with a six-speed manual featuring active rev matching and no-lift shifting. Cadillac also offers a 10-speed automatic.
Nothing about that specification is accidental. Cadillac could build a fast compact luxury car without three pedals, and the broader market provides plenty of evidence that buyers will accept exactly that. Instead, the company continues to engineer and sell both versions. The Blackwing doesn't need another gimmick to explain itself; 472 hp, rear-wheel drive and a clutch pedal already do the job.
07 Porsche 911 Carrera S
This one actually disappeared. When the current 992.2-generation 911 Carrera S arrived, Porsche offered it exclusively with its eight-speed PDK transmission. On August 13, 2026, the company announced a six-speed manual Carrera S for the U.S. and Canada. Porsche's explanation was unusually straightforward: “overwhelming customer demand.” The MT Package is exclusive to North America. That makes this less a story about manual transmissions in general than about customers getting an automaker to change the product.
Porsche didn't simply put the old transmission back on the order sheet, either. The manual Carrera S uses the seven-speed manual transmission from the Carrera T with seventh gear removed, and Porsche pairs it with equipment including the Sport Chrono Package and Porsche Torque Vectoring. The automatic-only Carrera S lasted roughly a year and a half.
08 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
The Corvette ZR1's headline figure is 1,064 horsepower. It all comes from a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Chevrolet's LT7 uses double overhead camshafts and a flat-plane crankshaft, producing its peak output at 7,000 rpm and 828 lb-ft at 6,000 rpm. Chevrolet took a production ZR1 to 233 mph in Germany, while the available Carbon Fiber Aero Package can generate more than 1,200 pounds of downforce at top speed.
What's particularly useful about the ZR1 in 2026 is the comparison sitting inside Chevrolet's own catalog. The Corvette E-Ray combines a V8 with front-axle electric assistance, and the ZR1X takes the ZR1's 1,064-hp LT7 and adds a 186-hp front electric motor. Chevrolet therefore has three different answers to the question of how electricity belongs in a Corvette: use it, don't use it, or use it to create something even more extreme.
09 Toyota Crown
The Crown name dates back decades, but Toyota didn't bring it back to America by building the sort of sedan most people would expect. The current car sits noticeably higher than a conventional four-door and comes exclusively with all-wheel drive and hybrid power. The regular hybrid emphasizes fuel economy, while the Platinum's Hybrid MAX system takes the same basic shape in a more performance-oriented direction.
That positioning becomes stranger when the Crown Signia is parked beside it. Toyota now sells two Crown-badged vehicles in America: one is officially a sedan with crossover-like proportions, while the other is officially a crossover with wagon-like proportions. The nomenclature is almost secondary. Toyota has effectively built a small Crown family around the spaces between America's established body-style categories.
10 Honda Prelude
Honda could hardly have chosen a more conventional name for an unconventional comeback.
The Prelude returned to the U.S. as a two-door hybrid rather than a traditional gasoline-powered sports coupe. More interestingly, Honda developed S+ Shift to give its electrified powertrain simulated gear changes even though there isn't a conventional multi-speed transmission underneath them.
The paddles can call up simulated shifts, and the system coordinates powertrain response and sound to give the driver something closer to the rhythm of changing gears. That makes the Prelude an interesting counterpoint to the Ioniq 5 N at the other end of this list. Hyundai is using software to give an EV some combustion-car theater; Honda is doing something related to make a hybrid coupe feel more involved.
Neither company needed to recreate gear changes for the vehicle to function. Both independently decided that removing mechanical events from the driving experience created room to put some of them back.
Cars Are Getting Harder To Put Into Boxes
Ten years ago, electrification looked like it might simplify the industry's categories: combustion cars on one side, EVs on the other. The reality has become considerably messier. A Mazda can use Toyota's hybrid hardware. A Corvette can make four-figure horsepower with or without electric assistance. Hyundai can program an EV to act as though it has a dual-clutch transmission, while Honda can give a hybrid coupe simulated shifts. Ford can make a pickup smaller while Chevrolet makes a Corvette vastly more powerful.
Even the body styles are becoming difficult to name. Maybe that's the useful way to look at the 2026 market. The technologies are converging, but the products manufacturers are building around them aren't.
