10 Things You Need To Know About The Toyota GR GT
Toyota’s GR division has been on a hot streak, and the GR GT looks like the wildest proof yet that the brand still knows how to build a proper driver’s car.
Toyota has been in the spotlight recently since the release of its latest sports cars, starting with the Toyota GR Supra in 2019. Since then, Toyota’s Gazoo Racing has released cars like the affordable, lightweight GR86, the GR Yaris, and the GR Corolla, which are Toyota’s rally-bred twins. Gazoo Racing has made Toyota’s sports cars fun, exciting, and a little unhinged in the best way possible.
But its most ambitious project was unveiled in December 2025, which we all know as the GR GT. The car is slated for arrival in 2027, so before it lands, here are 10 big things you need to know about Toyota’s new halo machine.
The GR GT Is Toyota's New Performance Flagship
The Supra was formerly Toyota’s premium sports car and rightly so, since the nameplate is so significant to the brand’s history and car culture. So the GR GT isn’t replacing it; it is Toyota’s new performance flagship. This is a car designed to show off the very best of what Toyota’s engineers can do when they go all out.
This car is very important for Toyota because it continues the legacy of its halo sports-car lineage. That lineage started with the Toyota 2000GT, continued with the Lexus LFA, and now reaches the GR GT, which has big shoes to fill. What makes it even cooler is that Toyota’s Chairman Akio Toyoda, aka Master Driver Morizo, was heavily involved in this project and made sure the car came out the way he envisioned. This is a car built by die-hard enthusiasts at Toyota.
It Has A Twin-Turbo V8—And That's A Huge Deal
The engine matters a lot in a car, and this is one engine everyone is going to remember. Toyota built a brand-new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 for the GR GT, which is quite a shock to the industry. Toyota killed off V8s from its lineup a while back in favor of a new twin-turbo V6 and turbocharged four-cylinders. A lot of new performance cars are also downsizing to turbo V6s, hybrid four-cylinders, or straight-up EVs. Then Toyota shows up with a new twin-turbo V8 for its halo car.
This is Toyota’s first production twin-turbo V8 engine, and it has a hot-vee setup to make the engine compact and responsive. This engine is paired with a single electric motor with an expected total output of 650 HP and 626 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful Toyota road car yet.
The Hybrid System Isn't There To Save Fuel
When people hear “Toyota hybrid,” they usually think Prius or Camry Hybrid, which is great for fuel economy, but the GR GT is not that kind of hybrid. It uses a single-motor hybrid system paired with that twin-turbo V8 for instant power delivery. This is especially important from a stop when the turbos are still spooling. It is meant to offset turbo lag and fill in the torque dip during gear changes, making everything seamless.
Another point that drives this home is that there is no EV-only mode. Some performance cars in this category usually have an EV mode that can only go less than 10 miles. The GR GT can’t do that; its focus is on performance, and that is the kind of hybridization enthusiasts can get behind.
All That Power Goes To The Rear Wheels
This might be my favorite part of this car. New hybrid performance cars usually put the electric motors in front for all-wheel drive, which means better acceleration times, especially when using launch control. Instead, the GR GT sends its power to the rear wheels only. This is a true sports car philosophy, as the front wheels are completely free to take care of handling the car.
That power is sent through Toyota’s new eight-speed automatic transmission integrated into a rear transaxle, with the electric motor also packaged back there. This was done for weight distribution, as the engine is also placed behind the front axle, giving it a front mid-engine layout. This gives the car a 45/55 front-to-rear weight balance, which should help with traction. Toyota isn’t just building a fast car, but a communicative one.
It Is Built On Toyota's First All-Aluminum Body Frame
Weight and structural rigidity were key things for this car, so this is the first Toyota to use an all-aluminum body frame. Using aluminum meant the car would be light and stiff, which is important for the suspension setup, safety, and handling. Toyota also needed it because all the hybrid stuff was already pretty heavy. But these hybrid components are placed low in the chassis, giving the car a very low center of gravity.
Toyota says its weight target for the GR GT is around 3,800 lbs; for a V8 hybrid GT performance car, that’s a bit ambitious. Ferrari was able to do it with the 296 GTB, which weighs less than 3,500 lbs. Combine that low center of gravity with a wide stance, a relatively light car, precise suspension, some serious brakes, and the GR GT starts to sound like a Toyota-engineered weapon.
The Aerodynamics Was Designed First
Most cars are styled first, then the aero team comes in and makes it work. The GR GT flips the process. Toyota says the car was developed with an aerodynamics-first, reverse-design approach. In other words, the wind helped decide the shape before the styling team polished it into something gorgeous.
That explains why the GR GT looks so purposeful. The long nose, low roofline, sculpted body sides, vents, and tight rear proportions are not there just to make the car look good or aggressive. They are part of the way the car manages airflow, cooling, drag, and stability. When Toyota says the GR GT is a race machine built for the road, this is the kind of engineering it is talking about.
The cool part is that the design still looks exotic. Aerodynamics-first cars can sometimes look awkward; a good example of this is the McLaren Senna. The GR GT manages to look dramatic and cool. But it is definitely one of those cars you spend hours looking at, and you’ll still find something new.
The Interior Is Wild And Exotic
The cabin is another place where the GR GT does not feel like any normal Toyota. It looks more like a cockpit than a conventional interior, which is exactly what this car deserves. The driving position is low with Recaro sports seats holding you in place. In front of you is a flat-bottom steering wheel, a digital gauge cluster, a large center infotainment with some big buttons, and the center console looks more like a command center. It is the kind of interior that tells you the car is special before you even start it.
The seat is fixed in place so you can only adjust the steering wheel and pedals to suit your driving position. This is a visually captivating cabin, especially with its red-and-black colour scheme. Toyota made sure you’ll never forget the type of car you’re in.
The GR GT3 Is Its Race-Bred Twin
Remember we said the GR GT was aerodynamic-first; its race-car twin proves this. The GR GT3 was unveiled alongside the GR GT, and that should tell you a lot about Toyota’s priorities. This is not a street car later dressed up for the track. The road car and race car were developed side by side, which heavily influenced the car's design.
The GR GT3’s job is to go racing under GT3 regulations, where customer teams and professional drivers need a car that is fast, durable, predictable, and serviceable. Toyota says the GR GT3 is aimed at drivers who want to win while still having a car that is approachable. That is a tough combination, but it is also exactly why race programs matter: they expose weaknesses quickly. If the racecar is successful, then the road car would also sell pretty well.
For the GR GT, the racing connection gives the whole project more credibility. It is one thing to say a car has motorsport DNA. It is another thing to develop it next to an actual GT3 machine; the other company that did this recently was Ford with the Ford GT.
You Can Already Drive This Car In Forza Horizon
Here is a fun twist: most of us will probably drive the GR GT in-game long before we even see one on the road. We were all very excited for Forza Horizon 6 since it is set in Japan and it features Toyota’s GR GT as the hero car, which you can drive on Xbox, PC and PlayStation 5. The timing is almost too perfect.
A new Forza Horizon set in Japan is already a dream scenario for enthusiasts. Add Toyota’s new flagship, and it becomes a rolling celebration of Japanese performance culture. Of course this car belongs there. It is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, twin-turbo V8 hybrid Toyota halo car. That sounds like a video-game fantasy, except Toyota is actually building it.
It also shows how Toyota is thinking about this car as a cultural object, not just a machine. The GR GT is rare, expensive, and likely impossible for most people to buy. But putting it in a game lets a massive audience experience the idea of it. That is some smart marketing.
It Is Expensive, Rare And Sold Out In The US
If you were hoping to casually stroll into a Toyota dealer and grab a GR GT, I have bad news. This thing is going to be rare, expensive, and incredibly hard to get. Toyota is planning to make around 500 cars worldwide, with around 200 to 250 cars reportedly allocated for the U.S but they’re already sold out before any car is delivered. If you’re hoping to buy one used, you might not even get the chance.
There is no official pricing yet for this car, but we know it’s going to be well into the six-figure territory. Prices are expected to be closer to $300,000, which puts the GR GT in a completely different conversation from any regular Toyota performance car. This puts it in the same company as mid-tier supercars from Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren and high-end Porsches. Honestly, that makes sense.
This is the third time the Toyota group has attempted to make a car this ambitious. Toyota is not just selling horsepower here; it is making a statement. Before the industry goes deeper into electrification, Toyota is building a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, twin-turbo V8 hybrid sports car meant for enthusiasts. It’s a recipe they’ve seen work before, although very slowly with the LFA. If this car delivers on its promise, it would instantly become an icon.
