Nearly 99,000 Rivian EVs Recalled Over Rearview Camera Issue

Rivian has issued a recall for 98,828 electric vehicles in the U.S. due to a software notification that can obstruct the rearview camera image when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse.

The recall covers certain 2022–2026 R1T, 2022–2027 R1S and 2027 R2 vehicles. The affected lot includes 34,088 R1T pickups, 62,259 R1S SUVs and 2,481 R2 SUVs. It also includes the R2, making it the newly launched SUV's first recall, and the vast majority of affected R2 vehicles had already received the corrected software before it was formally filed.

How The Camera Problem Occurs

The issue crops up only under a specific sequence of events. If stability control has been switched off in certain drive modes, the vehicle is left for a period of time and the driver returns, a safety alert can appear on the center display asking whether to return to a mode with stability control enabled.

On the other hand, if the driver shifts into Reverse without responding to that notification, it can overlap the rearview camera image. The camera view appears once the vehicle begins moving, but the delay means the system may not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111, which governs rear visibility.

There’s A Silver Lining

This isn't a hardware recall though. Rivian has released an over-the-air (OTA) software update that corrects the problem, and more than 95 percent of the affected vehicles had already received it when the automaker submitted its recall report on September 16, 2026.

Rivian says 95 percent of affected R1 vehicles and 96 percent of affected R2 vehicles had received the corrected software at the time of filing the recall report. Vehicles produced after August 10, 2026, were also built with the corrected software.

The recall was triggered by Rivian's internal testing team between July and September. Rivian says it is not aware of any customer reports, crashes, injuries or fatalities related to the condition.

Owner Notifications Begin In November

Rivian plans to begin mailing owner notification letters on November 9, 2026. Affected VINs will also become searchable through NHTSA's recall system on that date.
